Remembering Doug Gaskell
When I think about this past week, there is seemingly nothing else to highlight. The unexpected and untimely death of our friend and leader, Doug Gaskell, on Wednesday has left us all in shock. Without exception, every person with whom I have shared the news has responded with immediate disbelief. It is difficult to comprehend that someone who has been such a constant presence in the life of our church is suddenly no longer with us. Moments like these remind us just how fragile and precious life truly is.
To use Bart’s word, Doug leaves an immeasurable hole in our church family. Like so many of you, I have come to rely on Doug in so many ways: as a leader, mentor, friend, and colleague. I find myself missing him in every one of those capacities, and more! His unique personality, unending humor, incredible work ethic, depth of biblical knowledge, and unwavering commitment to Christ and the Church made him a remarkable presence among us. Doug gave generously of himself, and the impact of his faithfulness is forever woven into the life and ministry of Crozet UMC. His contributions will not soon be forgotten, nor will his absence be easily filled.
The writer of Hebrews offers us a fitting reminder in moments like these: “Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of God to you; consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” — Hebrews 13:7
Let us continue to deepen our knowledge of Scripture, take seriously our call to serve Christ, and invest ourselves wholeheartedly in the life and ministry of the Church. These were things Doug valued deeply, and they are ways we can carry his example forward. We will all be better disciples if we allow his faithfulness to inspire our own.
In the days ahead, may we surround Maryalice and their family with our prayers, love, and care. And may we give thanks to God for the gift of Doug, for his friendship, his faithful witness, and the many ways he helped make Crozet UMC the church it is today.
With a grateful heart,
Pastor Christy
