Christ Above Culture

Our next worship series will explore the theologian, H. Richard Niebuhr’s idea that our time in this world currently is about preparation: for the return of Christ, the completion of the work in Christ’s name, and the arrival of the Kingdom of God.  In the theological construct of “Christ Above Culture,” God is using human culture to provide for humankind, and culture actually becomes a means by which God can be at work for us individually and collectively.  Grounded in the concept that Jesus himself taught of making preparation as well as using cultural references to call his followers into a deeper faith, what about the parts of human culture that encourage and perpetuate human sin?  How does a disciple navigate the differences?  This Sunday we discover that being engaged with our faith and our culture is difficult but necessary work, yet Christ has given us hope to do just that.
